Already sporting a healthy glow on my bountiful bones, Summer is in full swing!
Saturday was the Menehune Surfing Content at Doheny State Beach in south Orange County. My 10 year old daughter Sarah and myself went to see how the kids surfed longboard. We bought an 8 foot BZ soft board this winter and are anxious to use it but Sarah has no surfing experience so watching others was a natural idea.
We got there around 7:45 and the littlest menehune were already competing. This is a family event put on every year by the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association. All the proceeds go to charity. The Ronald McDonald house is the lucky recipient of this years event. They had a raffle with 4 new surfboards, a longboard skateboard and plenty of t-shirts, beach towels and backpacks. We bought $25 in tickets and proceeded to win a towel, and a t-shirt. I was hoping for a surfboard or the skateboard but we we pretty happy with our winnings.
The kids ranged in age between 4 years old and 17 but we were most interested in kinds Sarah's age, especially girls. We were a little surprised to see that all competitors were still rather new to surfing and this fired up Sara. She not only wants to surf, but wants to compete as well. An interesting idea when you consider she had not yet surfed.
They also had a watermelon eating contest and an egg toss. We didn't do to well in the egg toss but Sarah did well enough in the watermelon eating content to win a $25 gift card to the Hobie surf shop.
I took my 12 year old son and 10 year old daughter to Doheney State Beach today and we officially broke the surfboard in today. While I was on the beach strategizing on how I would teach her to surf when I only tried it once 25 years ago, she proceeded to take the board out and get aquaintent with it in Doheny's gentle waves. Before I could teach her a thing, she was already surfing! My son was content to practice his boogie boarding and playing with a lobster carcass found on the beach.
What a great start to our summer. We will be going out again next weekend to get sand between our toes and sunscreen in our eyes. Hope your summer is going great as well.
