Surf Movie Review: Off the Lip
So I was in Walgreens last night getting a prescription filled and saw a DVD display with had what appeared to be a surfing title on one of the DVDs. My interest peaked, I picked it up to look at it and saw what appeared to be a B rated surf themed flick. It looked like it might be a parody to the classic surfing masters theme of surf flicks. It was only 3.99 so I thought I'd give it a try even though there was a high likelyhood it was a bomb. I'm glad I bought it.
Let me say this up front as I know this movie is a groaner but some people (like myself) get a kick out of the laughable and cheesy. It was not the best quality and it was obviously a b (maybe c?) rated movie.
Here's the plot. A Southern California ingenue is getting her first job as a reporter and gets hired by a second rate surfing website to find a legendary surfer. She is terribly nieve and is sent to Hawaii to find this legendary surfer that no one can actually say exists. Her hapless boyfriend follows her taping her days and generally causing problems with locals and her inept surfer guide. His soundmen keep getting killed off in the most ridiculous of ways. This is quite amusing. Foibles and missteps put them in all kinds of situations and she is eventually running from the law. I won't go into every detail. By this time I did not have any kind of expectations so the last 30 minutes were a surprise because it got marginally better, before the lackluster end.
I would NOT recommend this movie for anyone younger than an older teen as it has some sexual situations and a lax attitude towards drug use. I would recommend this movie to anyone wanting a silly movie to watch while embibing in one's particular mind expansion concoction...............JUST KIDDING!

Dizzy Blonde Strikes Again
I had my dates mixed up! While I am very sad that we will miss the Maven Session at Carlsbad Lagoon, we did not miss Ohana Day in Seal Beach afer all because is was last weekend, April 19th! There was free a free bodyboarding and surf clinic for those that wanted to learn how or improve their skills. Sarah learned how to angle her board down the line and turn that big 8 ft board from the wonderful people at M&M Surf School.
There was a raffle with a lot of prizes. Connor decided against the bodyboarding because he could not tear himself away from the raffle. He had won and was hooked! We bought $10 in raffle tickets and won twice. First time we won a Volcom sand chair and beach towel and the second time we won a $50 gift certificate to Mahe's Seafood and Steakhouse.
I want to thank our local Surfrider chapter for putting this on. We had a lot of fun!

Much More Experienced Now
Well, we've been out of the water a fair amount this winter but did have some surfing fun in the fall and the kids are quite comforable wakeboarding in wetuits too. The water is beginning to warm up and we can't wait to go out. The problem is scouts is conflicting with oue surfing plans. We will have to miss both Ohana day bodyboarding and surfing clinics in Seal Beach on April 26th and Maven Sessions wakeboarding clinic at Carlsbad Lagoon on April 27th because we will be ay Girls Scouting Junior Jam. Luckily we love this yearly event but I will miss the water. I am hoping we can make the Maven Sessions event at Mission Bay in May and our first surfing competition is coming up in June; the Doheny Menehune contest.

It's Summer Again and We're in the Water
Already sporting a healthy glow on my bountiful bones, Summer is in full swing!
Saturday was the Menehune Surfing Content at Doheny State Beach in south Orange County. My 10 year old daughter Sarah and myself went to see how the kids surfed longboard. We bought an 8 foot BZ soft board this winter and are anxious to use it but Sarah has no surfing experience so watching others was a natural idea.
We got there around 7:45 and the littlest menehune were already competing. This is a family event put on every year by the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association. All the proceeds go to charity. The Ronald McDonald house is the lucky recipient of this years event. They had a raffle with 4 new surfboards, a longboard skateboard and plenty of t-shirts, beach towels and backpacks. We bought $25 in tickets and proceeded to win a towel, and a t-shirt. I was hoping for a surfboard or the skateboard but we we pretty happy with our winnings.
The kids ranged in age between 4 years old and 17 but we were most interested in kinds Sarah's age, especially girls. We were a little surprised to see that all competitors were still rather new to surfing and this fired up Sara. She not only wants to surf, but wants to compete as well. An interesting idea when you consider she had not yet surfed.
They also had a watermelon eating contest and an egg toss. We didn't do to well in the egg toss but Sarah did well enough in the watermelon eating content to win a $25 gift card to the Hobie surf shop.
I took my 12 year old son and 10 year old daughter to Doheney State Beach today and we officially broke the surfboard in today. While I was on the beach strategizing on how I would teach her to surf when I only tried it once 25 years ago, she proceeded to take the board out and get aquaintent with it in Doheny's gentle waves. Before I could teach her a thing, she was already surfing! My son was content to practice his boogie boarding and playing with a lobster carcass found on the beach.
What a great start to our summer. We will be going out again next weekend to get sand between our toes and sunscreen in our eyes. Hope your summer is going great as well.
